However, the foot lifting mechanism for the lid is no where near as good as you would expect for a $200 garbage can. The problem with the lid mechanism is that it only works about half the time, if that. It's probably more like just 1/3 of the time. When you open the lid only half way, it just slams shut instead closing softly. You have to press down on the foot mechanism in a semi fast / firm motion in order to activate the soft close. Even then, the soft close is not as soft as their lower models. We have another Simplhuman garbage can that we purchased for $111 from BBB and that can's lid closes softly 100% of the time. I tested our old garbage can to see if I could get it to not work and I could NOT get it to NOT close softly. Even when I only opened the lid 1/4 or 1/2 or 2/3 of the way, it was still able to close softly. This is how the... My cats started to knock over my old Rubbbermaid stand by, so I knew I had to get something stronger. The lid closes softly. It is very easy to change the plastic liner bags. I use Glad brand 13 gallon bags. The inner plastic bin lifts up a few inches and can rest on a small ledge while you change the full liner. If there is something smelly in the trash can, when the lid closes - you won't smell it. Also I LOVE the fact that the foot pedal goes on 3 sides so that you don't have to be in front of the can to open the lid. The only thing I would wonder about for dog owners is if the dogs are big enough - they might also be able to open the lid if they happen to put their paws on the foot pedal. It has a an odor filter (have not used it long enough to see how that works) and a wide entry space, unlike the round container we used to have. You can only open this with the foot pedal, which we like. Also, when it closes, it is totally silent. It looks attractive, and is a nice addition to our kitchen. It seems well worth the price.
